5 Practical Steps To Lose Weight And Gain Muscle At The Same Time

1. Eat More Protein At Every Meal

A review published in Sports Medicine recommends consuming between 2.3 to 3.1 grams of protein per kilogram of your bodyweight (1.09 to 1.41 grams of protein per pound of your bodyweight).

As a general rule, aim to include at least 25 to 30 grams of protein in
every meal – and even slightly more if you are vegetarian or vegan.

 2. Lose Weight Slowly

Drastic drops in weight tend to be the result of losing not just fat, but also muscle. Therefore, do not try to lose as much weight as quickly as possible; lose weight slowly. Lose no more than 1 to 2 pounds per week.

Reducing your caloric intake by 500 calories per day is a good place to start.

Include at least two days of weight training a week in order to maintain existing muscle mass and three or more times a week to build muscle.

  4. Keep Your Cardio Workouts Short and Sweet

To lose the most weight and gain muscle out of your cardiovascular workouts, it’s best to focus on high-intensity interval exercises, such as:

Repeated sprints on the treadmill, elliptical or bike.

These workouts will burn fat while building muscle, whereas low- to moderate-intensity steady-state cardio burns both muscle and fat

 5. Give Your Muscles A Break And Be Patient

“Muscles need rest to grow.”. When it comes to building muscle, doing more than your body can take is not necessary.

How much break?

For instance, f you perform an intense lower-body strength routine on Monday, wait until at least Wednesday to target your lower body again.

You can always perform upper-body lifts on Tuesday.

Then, every week, schedule at least one to two days of full rest from your structured exercise.

Be Patient
As you get closer to your goal, expect to see more subtle changes in your weight and muscle levels, and don’t get discouraged.

To many, the answer to the question of whether Dieting is the real answer to weight loss is a straight forward “Yes”. What if I told you the answer is “No”, and also that rather than lose weight with dieting, or diet plan to lose weight and gain muscle, you are actually making weight gains. Research shows that one of the main causes of weight gain is dieting. True, rather than make you lose fat, Dieting makes you fat or fatter.  How?

As you reduce your food intake to lose weight, your body put itself on ‘deficiency alert’. It gets the impression that there is shortage of food and therefore slows down your body metabolism to get the best use of the reduced amount of food you are feeding it.

What many do not understand is, when they say they want to lose weight, what they actually want is fat loss. If you lose weight rapidly, almost 25 percent of that weight loss can be made up of water, muscle and other lean tissue.

The reason for this is that the human body is generally programmed to hold on to fat. So in terms of what the body considers to be a ‘shortage’, it will actually go as far as breaking down muscle and losing water in order to hold on to its fat reserves. Fashionable diets programs suggest that you can lose up to 10 pounds in a week, but note this fact: it is physically impossible to lose more than 900g (2lb) of body fat in a week.

Additionally, if you lose weight quickly by restricting your food intake by dieting and then go back to eating normally, a much higher percentage of the food you eat is laid down as fat. Why? Because your body wants to build up extra fat stores, in case the type of shortage you subjected it occurs again.

There’s also the question of metabolism. When you crash diet, your metabolism slows down to conserve energy and make the most out of the small amounts you are eating. What happens when you go back to eating normally? Well, everything you eat is being dealt with at a much slower rate and more fat is stored. That is why we find many many people losing weight but they cannot keep it permanent.

Speeding Up Body’s Metabolism – How Does It Work?

You hear a lot about speeding up your body’s metabolism in order to make your body burn calories faster, but how does that really work?

When you work out, your body’s natural functions speed up. You breathe harder, your heart pumps blood faster, your body temperature increases so you sweat more. All of these things require more energy. So your body gets that additional energy by burning the calories it has received from the foods you have consumed.

You might assume that the moment you stop working out, you stop burning these extra calories. But you would be wrong. Actually, when you raise your body’s metabolism through physical activity, it maintains that elevated rate long after your workout has finished. How much longer? Depending on the intensity and duration of your workout, your metabolism could be running “hot” for between 7 and 12 hours after you are finished.

Working out is one way to speed up your body’s metabolism. Another way is by increasing your body temperature. When you are fighting an infection, your body’s natural thermostat increases so your immune system can fight whatever virus, bacteria, fungus, parasite or other thing is causing you to become ill. This is what a fever is. When you are feverish, your metabolism is speeded up so you are burning more calories. That’s why people who have been sick often report a lot of weight loss once they get better.

You can simulate this same increase in body temperature, although not as severe, by consuming caffeine, ephedrine and other drugs. These will stoke up the body’s natural thermostat so that your metabolism runs hotter. This isn’t always the safest way to lose weight, however.
